Dolly Birds in a Dolls House.

When I saw this editorial for Hint Magazine (September Issue), I couldn't help reminiscing back to my English class in school. One of the plays that we covered was 'A Dolls House', written by Henrik Ibsen from Norway. The play is all about a husband 'Torvald' and his ''dolly'' wife 'Nora', who eventually breaks free from his ehhhh... ''manly'' grip.

I personally find this editorial a symbol of that play, I could be wrong though.... However, given that the editorial is called 'Dolly Birds', I could be close. Ok, enough of the play that was written in 1879 (a completely different World to the one we live in now...?).

Another thing that attracted me to this editorial was the oversized eyelashes. I LOVE fake eyelashes, I don't really know why? Its not like I wear them often, but when I do, I feel quite glamourous. However, when I look in the mirror, that glamourous feeling is gone when I see them up near my eyebrows, as opposed to my eyelashes. Fake eyelashes don't treat me well (just like Torvald didn't treat Nora well), but hey, like a fool I still love them!

And of course, the clothes further enticed me to post about this editorial. Look at the coat on the right hand side in the first picture! Look at the sweater dress on the right hand side in the third picture! Look at the blouse on the left hand side in the last picture! I truly do love!

So, what do you think about this editorial? Is it as symbolic for you, as it is for me?

Oh and the quotes you see, are quotes from the play. Some said by Nora, some by Torvald.

Oh, and by the way, thanks so much for all the tips on how to upload photos. Appreciate it! Have a great Tuesday!

I studied 'A Doll's House' in high school AND college! I studied a lot of Ibsen's plays actually. Anyways, these false eye lashes are a bit creepy but I think the whole editorial is kind of haunting so it works!

I love the look of fake eyelashes, too but I can never do them on my own! They look, well, very fake on me. The editorial is great. It kind of reminds me of Tim Burton, whom I love so much!

The girls do have something doll like about them...with disproportionately big heads like the bratz dolls, I don't know the play so I can't really comment on the symbolism, but they do look worn out and tired, maybe a bit scary as well...

Wowah! This editorial is a bit creepy. Those eyelashes are SCARY! Haha.

Is that what Barbie dolls would look like if they came to life?

:)

Best wishes from one blogger to another,

Read in this book in my high school English class as well, and i do think the editorial goes with it quite a bit! isn't it surprising that a man from the late 19th century would actually be so feministic? girl power, i guess then! lol!

Sara said...

wow I wish I could do that, I would probably poke myself in the eye though lol.

I've not read it but the editorial is kinda cool but also a little creepy! The eyes make them look so delicate! I guess that's the whole point. I love false eyelashes too but rarely ever wear them!

I like the second picture. the eyelashes are pretty intense.

Hmm, I'm actually not too crazy of the dollish make-up (and I've gotta add that falsies don't treat me well either. Not AT ALL), but I adore the clothes! The coat in the third pic is fab.

ilikestuff said...

Wow, those eyelashes are wild! They look like giant tarantulas! Very doll-like.

Great editorial and so creative to add the quotes! I have never seen the play, but I can really visualize much more of a story behind these photographs with the added text.

Aside from that, the images are wonderful! I too love fake eyelashes - I never wear them, but I love seeing them in fashion and beauty editorials. And the all black and white spread? Genius.
